Pros: If you want to produce flies the size of small birds, that cast well, and more importantly fish well, then this is the DVD for you. Articulated Streamers is a very well produced, easy to follow, DVD. The footage is clear, well focused, and the tying instructions concise. |

Cons: Kelly Galloup really assumes the viewer has knowledge of his flies. He describes one simply by saying, “this is just an articulated Zoo Cougar”. That’s fine if you know what a basic Zoo Cougar is. |

Other Thoughts: This is an advanced DVD is on how to tie articulated streamers, not how to tie flies. The author assumes the viewer has a basic knowledge tying. Perhaps some viewers might be put off by the lack of discussions of thread selection, hook selection, material selection, tools etc. I do not see that as a con at all. There are tons of good DVDs for beginners. So many DVDs spend way to much valuable time going over basics.
Kelly Galloup gets right to the heart of the matter. Articulated flies are all about the articulation and a fair amount of time is spent on this connection. The explanation of how to make these this joints is outstanding and well demonstrated.
It’s always interesting seeing how other tiers handle materials. Kelly Galloup’s explanation of how he spins the huge hanks of deer hair he uses on some patterns was outstanding. |
