Description of the Dr. Slick Mitten Clamp - Tools:

Dr. Slick fly fishing tools have become the standard for quality and function. The Dr. Slick Mitten Clamp certainly uphold the tradition of quality fly fishing equipment for the serious angler. These handy and easy to use pliers function without the need for finger holes. You will be able to operate them with mittens, gloves, and at any other time easily and without the fumbling required to get your fingers into the loops as you try to quickly remove the hook, get the fish back safely into the water, and get back to fishing. The 5 ½ inch jaws are the perfect length for hook removal, not so long that they are clumsy and not too short to easily grab hooks. The jaws are half smooth to protect the fly and half toothed for a good grip. The Mitten Clamp fly fishing pliers are also sturdy enough to far outlast the standard forceps that seem to bend and need frequent replacement. You will be able to use them on countless fishing trips for years to come.

No finger loops here! This series was designed for angling in cold weather where gloves or mittens are the norm, or for tangling with big fish. If you’ve ever had your knuckles mashed by a powerful fish, the beauty of these clamps becomes apparent. Excellent for salmon and steelheaders. Simply squeeze the clamp all the way through the ratchets to release. To close, squeeze until the ratchets lock. This one-hand wonder is spring-loaded, has a wrist lanyard, and can easily handle all streamside tasks.

Clamps are designed for a myriad of tasks like crushing barbs, removing hooks from fish (or yourself!), opening/closing split shot, knot-tying, cutting tippet, etc. Knowing what tasks you regularly perform stream-side will help you select the clamp(s) that best suit your angling needs. Clamps tend to be a very personal item, and like a favorite rod or reel, people have preferences for their clamps. Some anglers like short clamps and others prefer long. Some like straight jaws while others prefer curved. Many like the gold loops/handles and others prefer the stealth-mode black. So, if you lose your buddy's 5” curved black clamp, don’t assume the 4” gold loop straight model you gave him off your vest will clear the air.

Pros: I fish a lot - owned this product for 8 months....I like not having to squeeze fingers into the holes, and the narrow straight jaws which make it easier to safely remove a fly which is down deep. Opening them with one hand requires a little practice, but is ok once you get used to it....the wrist loop is useless, as once you have a grip there is no purpose for the loop and it gets in the way. All that said, my #1 clamp is still one with finger loops and a 45 degree angle on the clamps.
Cons: hard to open with one hand
