Lamson Ketchum Release Tool - Tools | Large

Description of the Lamson Ketchum Release Tool - Tools:

Fish mortality can be reduced by landing the fish quickly and by avoiding netting and handling. This technique will preserve protective coatings and eliminate air exposure. The Ketchum Release® tool makes this low-mortality release easy.

The tool also allows you to retrieve your fly without damage; it allows your hands to stay dry in cold weather; and it keeps hands a safe distance from toothy fish.

The Ketchum Release® is available in three freshwater sizes:

  • Midge - for #18 hooks and smaller
  • Original - for hooks as small as #18 and flies as large as medium-bodied streamers
  • Big Bug - for streamers, hoppers and other large flies

Pros: Great tool for releasing fish. I use it primarily for steelhead fishing where I am dealing with generally a small hook and a large fish. It can get down into the fish's mouth and extract a small hook very cleanly and with little effort. The trick I found is to use the weight of the fish to push against to release the hook. When you do this it works great!
Cons: The tool is not as effective with large beaded head flys such as a steelhead streamer because the tool does not go over the beaded head. It will spin on the bead so you can not put the right amount of pressure on the hook itself to extract it. Also if you are catching and releasing fish with a net you need to learn how to keep the fish steady so pressure can be applied to the hook for an effective release.
Other Thoughts: Great tool to hook on your vest with a retractable cord for releasing fish. It does not bend your hook or damage your fly during hook removal like forceps tend to do.
