Description of the Ross CLA (Cimarron Large Arbor) - Reels:

The CLA is an affordable hybrid large arbor fly reel that carries the name of one of Ross’ oldest and most popular series. However the CLA is a big departure from the original Cimarron design. It incorporates our newest generation drag mechanism that is extraordinarily smooth, heat resistant and provides incredible stopping power. The CLA matches the Cimarron in durability and affordable price, but offers a stronger drag, greater drag range and sensitivity, more pleasant incoming and outgoing sound, hybrid large arbor configuration, innovative conversion mechanism and other additional features that anglers have come to expect with modern fly reel design. Each reel in this series is designed with a specific diameter and width to maximize the properties of drag consistency and line retrieval. The CLA will set a new standard for what anglers come to expect from an American made, high-quality, reasonably priced fly reel.

CLA 4-7 (Larger Components for Bigger Fish!) The mechanical operation of the CLA is consistent throughout the series, but improvements have been made to the CLA sizes 4-7 to support their use when battling bigger fish. When comparing them to the smaller sized CLA reels, you will find that the 4-7 reels have a larger drag knob, handle and spool cap, but most importantly, they have a STRONGER DRAG SYSTEM. To ensure smooth performance with fast-running fish, these larger four sizes have also been equipped with oil impregnated bushings for spool rotation. The frame and spool have also been reinforced to eliminate flexing. With a wide range of sizes available, the CLA series is appropriate for any fishing application, including Spey.

Pros: Good reel. Very nice drag system. Nice finish. I've used this reel for two+ years, used it a lot and am mostly pleased with it. BUT
Cons: Dirt or sand greatly hamper the performance of this reel. It seems like every time it touches the ground I have to take it apart and rinse it out.
Other Thoughts: If I could keep from dunking it in the river it would work flawlessly. But that's not the way I roll.

Pros: I needed a large arbor for big rainbows that can get into some pretty big and fast water. I also own a cla5 I use for Chinook and big Steelhead that has performed well for years. The price is very affordable and performance is great.
Cons: None to speak of really.
Other Thoughts: Ross delivers a good product for a reasonable price that I know I can depend on.

Pros: I purchased a spool to add to the reel and spool that I've had for several years. The new spool works very well just like the rest of my CLA equipment.
Cons: The only con that I can think of is the cost which is a little higher than I would like.
Other Thoughts: I purchased the spool with the backing loaded. I added a 5 weight clear intermediate sinking line. The first time I used it I caught a 7 lb silver salmon in about four feet of water 50 yards from the beach in the Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma Washington. It doesn't get much better than that.

Pros: Excellent product. I own about 6 Ross Reels. I bought 2 Cimarron Large Arbor reels, plus backing, line and a small ton of flies, from the RiverBum for a trip to Belize. Nearly every bonefish (my wife and I combined for about 150 bones' in 6 days of fishing) took us into the backing and the drag on these reels never failed. Smooth as silk, even at that critical point when you go from hand feeding line to engaging the drag. On a super-crazy bonefish tear that can be an abrupt event but the Cimarron smoothed everything out and we never lost a fish (break-off or pulled hook) because of equipment failure. Of yeh, I also manged to take a Grand Slam (Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon). Permit are very hard fighting fish but the Cimmaron on an 8wt did its job on a 13lb permit. I took at Tarpon that went 125lbs. The Cimmaron was up to the task without any trouble. For the serious Silver King chasers go to the largest size, you will need the line! These reels work, last for a long time and are the best deal for the money. I have more expensive reels that usually sit home in the rod locker because the Ross reels get all of the work. As I turn over tackle there is never a debate about what brand reel I will buy, its only the style and size of the Ross Reel that comes into play...
Cons: I have yet to have a problem so I have no cons to report. Just make sure you buy the right reel for the job.
Other Thoughts: The various styles and colors are cool. They just stand out on the rob racks at the lodges. Why that matters - who knows - but it is another thing to talk to your buddies about.

Pros: Very smooth reel to use. Excellent drag system. Well made with a great finish.
Cons: No problems with these reels at this stage.
Other Thoughts: I have used this reel to catch Milkfish of 1m+ length. The reel performed well & the drag was very effective in tiring the fish. My 8 year old son also landed a Milkfish using this reel
