RiverBum's Mission
Bring premium flies and fly fishing products to fly fishers at great prices.
About Us

RiverBum.com began with an eclectic group of fly fishing buddies who were each, in their own way, tired of their choice in flies: Either pay $2.00, spend hours of time at the vise, or buy something cheaper only to have it fall apart after a couple casts. The shop was born after carefully sampling over 50 of the world’s best tiers. From this world wide sampling we’ve selected the absolute best tying facilities. We have confidence in all our products because we fish them ourselves. We’ve found the flies and the fly fishing gear and put them out there at great prices. Now that you have found us we’re looking forward to building a lifelong relationship with you and other fly fishers from around the world. RiverBum will always be expanding to include even more fly patterns and fly fishing products. Please contact us if you have any questions, comments or if you just want to tell us about how great the fishing was. We’d love to hear from you!

Here's our team
Steve Knight - Partner
Steve Knight grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah where his addiction to fly fishing began. It started harmlessly enough in his early teens with brookies in small mountain streams. Later he would occasionally binge on cutthroats in alpine lakes. Soon he was fishing bigger waters such as the Green, Snake, and Madison Rivers. Neither a stint as a graduate student in engineering at Stanford nor working for Bell Labs in New Jersey was enough to curb the craving. It only taught him that taking bass with a fly is great fun. As an MBA student at Dartmouth, he found that the Connecticut river system in upper New England can amply satisfy that certain itch. Now with a wife, four active children and a business of his own, his heart is often on the river even when his body is in the office, watching a school play, or cheering at soccer, baseball, basketball, lacrosse and volleyball games. Good friends and good fishing; may they always be a part of life for Steve and for all of us.

I’ve been an outdoor enthusiast from a very young age spending much time afield fishing and hunting with family and friends. For us years were measured not by the weather seasons but with the coming and passing of hunting and fishing seasons. My first fly rod experience came at the age of twelve and I’ve been enamored with the magic and lure of the sport ever since. At the fly tying vise each winter creations of feather and hair would be stocked up for the forthcoming season, when once again waters would clear and fish would look to the surface. I’ve been a fly tying and fly fishing instructor, as well as a guide for the last twenty three years, still enjoying the thrill of opening up the vision and excitement of fly fishing to those familiar with a fly rod, as well as the new comers to the sport. Over the years I’ve met hundreds of people, all with desires to find their own way with a fly rod, making their own memories at the waters edge. Fly fishermen are a unique association of different individuals, many enjoying and sharing a genuine love and reverence for what we’ve come to know and hold dear in this activity called fly fishing.

RiverBum was an idea born of a number if individuals, all of whom brought passion and excitement to the table as we envisioned its conception and mission. Fly fishing is an art that lures and entices more than just a wild trout, it reaches into our souls drawing us individually, bringing peace, solace, and a personal calm that can’t be measured, or acquired in any other way. The memories we are fortunate to share become timeless. Whether it’s the surge of a Madison River bow, the sight of a dozen Beaverhead browns sipping Pale Morning Duns in skinny water, the screaming of your reel as you lodge a caddis fly in a Missouri River brown; it could be that quiet morning midging to shallow feeding trout on Nelson’s Spring Creek, those rainy spring afternoons throwing Baetis mayflies to browns on the Provo River, or even still a sunny afternoon on a quiet freestone stream searching for wild Cutthroats with your three weight, your heart never feels at ease with the adrenalin race. The fly fishing journey is a lifetime experience for many, and we at RiverBum are simply happy to facilitate that journey for you. We’re excited to offer our services and assist you in any way possible.

I believe the single event that has led me to where I am today took place when I was about 8 years old in a canoe with my grandpa. It was that day that I learned to fly fish on a small isolated pond in the heart of Maine. Just recently my grandpa at age 84 caught his biggest trout ever on a fly rod and I was lucky enough to be in the canoe with him once again 20 years later. What a moment! I hope I catch my biggest when I’m that old. Since then I’ve sharpened my fly fishing skills and get out fishing as often as possible. Most my free time is spent traveling, fishing, golfing, skiing or playing video games (fishing games are awesome!). I graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. I’m a guru when it comes to computers and programming. My current job with RiverBum is to manage the web site and any other technical aspect of the company. After we spent what seems like an eternity getting this site up and running, I’m very proud with what we’ve created. I’m also very excited to unveil some of our current projects! Why are you still reading? Go get your flies and get on the water! Try my favorite rig sometime, a PMX with a Copper J dropper. - Matt

I was lucky enough to grow up in Utah, just 10 minutes from a little trout stream where I spent nearly all my free time as a kid. There aren't many fish bigger than 10 inches in that stream but I spent my youth trying to prove there was at least one giant lunker. There wasn't. Except for a few years in Brazil, I have lived in Utah all of my life. I have guided fly fishing on various streams and rivers for the last decade or so. I guess I'm something of a river bum. I spend most of my vacation time wandering the West in search of my next favorite stream. I love bird and big game hunting as well, so , except for the occasional cast 'n' blast, the Fall is the off season as far as fishing is concerned. My English Setter, Belle, and I are pretty much enamored with chukar hunting which gives me both a nice break from fishing and a good workout. Somewhere between fishing trips and the rest of this I wrote some stuff, got an English degree, worked at a fly shop, guided fish and birds, ran a guide service and lodge, did some fly fishing competitions, and currently I do a bit of all of those things. Fly design has been another passion of mine for the last 10 or so years and I'm lucky enough to have added a few patterns to the RiverBum catalog. RiverBum has been nothing short of a labor of love for all of us. We've spent hours in the basement staring at flies and fly gear and making our families think we're nuts, but we're all excited to see what the future will be. Thanks for coming to visit us. Let us know what you think and we'll hopefully see you on the river. - Jake

They spent countless days on the Yellowstone, Madison, Jefferson, and Gallatin over the years. His first “big fish” was a 4lb, 23-inch white fish caught on the Yellowstone. With that he was hooked! “Fishing is the one thing I do where no matter what is going on in my life, I can completely check out and enjoy the moment”. His Grandfather, Brother, Mom, Step-dad and many friends are avid fishers as well. He is grateful for the positive impact they and fishing have had on his life. Goal in life: Be a Riverbum! Good fishing!

I tag along when my grandfather and his friends go fishing. Even at the young age of 3 (or maybe 4) I knew that fishing isn’t just catching fish, the patience and the anticipation for the bite, the peacefulness and calmness of the activity that is very appealing. When you catch a fish, it’s an explosion of excitement and pure happiness. What I remembered most was the bond of friendship and mutual respect that strengthened amongst my grandfather and his buddies. Fishing not only teaches us to be patient but also helps us appreciate nature. I received my Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from Central Philippine University, Philippines. I have previously worked in a Telecommunications Company. I am happiest when I travel, go hiking, play soccer and hanging out at the beach. I am rediscovering the art of fishing through Riverbum. These guys know what it’s all about and I trust them, completely. Let’s go catch fish!
Still more to come!
